UN Secretary-General commends immunization efforts in Nigeria
On Monday the 24th of August 2015, the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Ban Ki-Moon visited Family Health Clinic, a primary Health Care facility located in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) which offers routine immunization on a daily basis. The clinic is among those benefiting from the Routine Immunization Intensification project aimed at reducing the number of unimmunized children in AMAC, with support from WHO.
The UNSG was shown around the cold chain used for vaccine storage and he also viewed the immunization chart that showed targets being achieved. He then vaccinated children with oral polio vaccine.
In his speech the UNSG commended the government of Nigeria and partners on the quality of work being done in immunization by ensuring that all children are vaccinated against vaccine preventable diseases.
He congratulated the country for being free of the wild polio virus for more than one year and encouraged the government and partners to continue along the path of sustaining the polio free status until the country is certified polio free which requires two more years without any polio case.
Dr Ado Muhammad, the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care (NPHCDA) who was also present described the visit as the highest level political support for primary health care and immunization in Nigeria.
The visit coincided with the fourth anniversary of the bomb blast of the UN building in Abuja which the UNSG commemorated by laying a wreath at the UN House in remembrance of the fallen colleagues.
